Know that the right brain uses language better than the left brain. It does not use the wrong adjective in the wrong place and it does not overwrite. It has all the knowledge of the left brain, is holistic, taps into the entire universe, the past, the present and the future. There are specific rules that apply to right brain writing which will be given to you. It is also necessary to make a shift from one side of the brain to the other. There is a specific technique, also explained in this book, to make this shift which is based on scientific studies.
Both sides of the brain hold very different knowledge about a person, and are quite separate. The left side of the brain is verbal, logical and analytical. The right side is non-verbal, holistic, intuitive, and loves complexity. The left side of the body (and the left hand) is related to the right brain, and the right side of the body (and right hand) is related to the left brain. This is so for 95% of the population.
Normally the left brain is in control of the right brain, but by effecting this ‘shift’, we are moving from a beta, thinking, left brain on-guard state, to an alpha, slightly more relaxed right brain mode. Both sides of the brain come into harmony with each other, and this allows the right brain to take control of the left brain.
The left brain loves to help but if it can’t make sense of anything, it gets bored and drifts off. In right brain free writing, we make use of this knowledge in shifting from the left side of the brain to the right side of it.

Once this shift is made, there are certain steps to keep the right brain in control.
1. The use of baroque classical music. The beat is the same as the heart beat when it is relaxed.
2. There are rules of right brain writing such as; no stopping; no thinking; no crossing out or rubbing out. Stopping allows the left brain to get back into the act. Crossing out is a left brain critical activity, and thinking is a left brain activity. The right brain is non verbal and the story will come in the form of visions or ideas or pictures in the mind of the writer who simply writes down what he or she SEES in his or her head. This develops the use of the imagination in each person.

This needs to be explained simply to learners who don’t, at this stage, need to know about left and right brains, alpha and beta states, and so on. Make it all as simple as you can. It’s the adults who need the background knowledge.
It will also help students to “break boxes” as up until now, conventional creative writing has been done with a left brain approach. The left brain is about control, obeying rules and conforming. The right brain approach is about freedom – the freedom to explore within the deep hidden domain of the right brain. It is about writing without restraint, without judgment or criticism. Right brain writing encourages learners to be rebellious in their writing, to be original, to be themselves, to write prolifically. This results in tremendous creativity.
Our future leaders, inventors, engineers and architects are formed in the classrooms of today. By helping them to explore and explode their ideas, this will free their creativity, and set them on paths destined to fulfill their dreams. It will help our society to better itself.
Learning need not be a chore. It can be fun! By holding back criticism and judgement when it comes to creative writing, learners will unearth talents they never knew they had!

Understanding Left and Right Brains
Our brains have two halves; a left and a right hemisphere which are joined in the centre by the corpus callosum, enabling both sides of the brain to contribute to the task in hand.
According to Marilee Zdenek in her book “The Right Brain Experience”, 95% of the population have their left hemisphere on the left side of the brain, and the right hemisphere on the right side. About 5% have mixed abilities in the hemispheres. However, it stands to reason that if you are able to read this, you have both a left hemisphere of the brain and a right hemisphere that are operative.
While our best intentions are to have a whole brain with both sides of the hemispheres working in perfect harmony with each other, it is of interest to know that each hemisphere has its own abilities and tasks and holds entirely different knowledge from its partner. In the right brain there are secrets about a person that are often deeply buried and which surface during right brain creative writing. Traumatic experiences also often surface, which can bring healing to the writer.

Spatial – it works out jigsaw puzzles and finds the way home without getting lost.
Musical – it responds to music and musical talent.
Metaphoric – it understands metaphors and images.
Artistic – drawing, painting and sculpture.
Spiritual – prayer, meditation and mysticism.
Dream maker – realising fantasies.
Controls the movement on the opposite side of the body.
In the last few decades, researchers have shown that a person’s performances can alter by stimulating a specific hemisphere of the brain.
The right brain has often been the victim of under-stimulation which can cause it to atrophy. By using exercises to unlock the lateral abilities of the right brain, and to stimulate the imagination, the right brain regains its powers and assists in stimulating the overall development of learners. More about Right and Left Brains
All your learnt knowledge is stored in your left brain. This left brain tries hard. ‘Trying’ implies that you might succeed or you might not, and this means stress. The left brain is helpful to you and other people.
It is also meddlesome in your own work and that of other people. It is arrogant, and thinks it knows it all. Worst of all, it is a critic, of yourself and of other people. It is this critic that is at lunch during the right brain creative writing lessons.
Because the knowledge that the left brain has is learnt knowledge, acquired from teachers, books, or other sources, and because sometimes too much editing is done in the search for “perfection”, all too often the writer’s “voice” is lost. In fact, left brain ‘creative’ writing work frequently divides the reader from the experience and is often quite boring to read.
This is because work done by the left brain is all “thought” work. It is second hand. Somebody taught you something and you regurgitated it, rearranged it, edited it and polished it to read well or sound ‘okay’. Left brain creative writing depends upon the eye looking at something, thinking about what is seen and finding mistakes. It is about criticism. This de-motivates learners, and quite often goes against the very processes of education, which comes from the Latin word “educe,” to ‘lead out’ (as opposed to ‘fence in’ with criticism).
By stopping to think, by crossing out and rubbing out and using the Thesaurus in the process of “creative writing” you are actually destroying the creative process, by over-control and imposed limitations.
Right brain writing comes with power as it comes directly from the creative realm, without thought, in the form of ideas or visions brought in by the imagination. It uses language better than the left brain, and doesn’t overwrite or use the wrong adjective in the wrong place.
Today young people have been known to quite often need sessions with psychologists, as some of them are unable to see all the details in a picture or ‘still’ text. This is because they have become used to watching moving pictures in the form of television or videos, and so the imagination gets virtually no stimulation.
By using the techniques for unlocking the creativity of the right brain and doing the various creative exercises suggested in this book, a lot of the personality disorders, that come from the inability to use the imagination, can be lessened.
Right brain creative writing is different from what is normally (but incorrectly) called creative writing.

It will develop the “voice” of the writer as we all use language in a different way. Some have a quick way of using words while others are more languid. It is important to keep the “voice” of a writer in his or her creative work.
We take care when editing work produced by the right brain as the left brain is always ready to meddle in the work its partner has produced. For example, it is better to remove, when editing, rather than to add words. Removing superfluous words or just correcting spelling and punctuation are the most vital elements of editing, in terms of keeping intact the voice and power of the writer.

Rules of Right Brain Creative Writing
Left brain writing is about control, about conformity, about obedience, being socially correct, not taking chances and always doing one’s best to please the educator or follow the rules. Right brain writing is about freedom, original spontaneous thought, laughing and taking chances, not about caring to be “socially correct.”
It is about writing down what is on the top of one’s mind. It is about digging deep and exploring one’s inner being. It is about allowing the marginal and hidden to surface. Because the right brain does not expect to fail, and just does, and also does not like criticism, learners are told that nothing they write is wrong.
Right brain creative writing has rules that help make this process a success.
1. The lateral unlocking process requires all learners to write for ten minutes without stopping. This means, no talking, no reading over, no stopping to think. They can write whatever they wish in the ten minutes. No one is going to criticize anything. The goal in that ten minutes is to produce quantity, achieving that blissful state of uninterrupted word flow.
Quality, in the sense of “obsession with perfect grammatical parameters”, is given second place, to the benefit of quantity representing “spontaneous optimum word flow”. Fixing the nitty-gritties of spelling and punctuation is understood to be part of a later editing process.
2. Use unlined (blank) paper – lined paper is about control. All your teachers you ever had are speaking on those lines, telling you to write neatly, to conform, to do as they told you. 3. The writer may not think before starting to write – thinking is a left brain process. Words will be produced on the paper but they should come from images flashed into the imagination which then become words written down on the paper.
4. The writer may not cross out with pencil, rub out with eraser, use tippex or in any way change anything he or she has written – altering work is a “criticism” and the students have been told that nothing they do is wrong.
5. They may not stop writing once they have started. Stopping would allow the left brain to take control again.
6. They may write the words “go go” a couple of times, or “up up” as this will inspire some more thoughts.
7. When the ten minutes are up, learners are asked to read their work aloud, not for criticism but to see how good they are. This will encourage their right brains to produce more, and even better work, as time goes on.

Shifting from the Right to the Left Brain
Creative people, by definition, draw inspiration from the realm of creativity. This realm is available to the rest of mankind too. Whilst the process to access this realm is very simple, it is based upon scientific studies that include work on the splitting of the brain and the discovery of the differences in the two hemispheres of the brain.
In general, the left hemisphere of the brain is usually more dominant. By doing a short breathing exercise which moves the learner from a beta (judgemental) state to an alpha, more relaxed state, the right brain is able to come into sync with the left brain. The next brief exercise bores the left brain. This allows the right brain to take control over the left brain.
By using melodious baroque classical music (without vocals, by Mozart, Vivaldi, Shubert or Handel, for example) the right brain is further encouraged to tap into the creative realm.
This lateral unlocking of the right brain becomes the “flour” with which you can make many different “cakes” (or cookies, muffins, bread, pancakes…). The right brain may produce essays, instant speeches, letters, poems, advertisements, flyers, menus, job applications, lesson notes, sermons, the outline of a novel or spontaneous stories…
It has been said that the two things that can save mankind are creativity and problem-solving. Both of these are the attributes of the right brain.

The right brain just DOES. It doesn’t have the word “failure” in its “vocabulary” as it is about spontaneous images and feelings. It is the happy, joyful, playful part of oneself. Writing done with the right brain comes from the creative sphere, in the form of pictures produced by the imagination, as opposed to word spelling, grammar and math rules filed away in the left brain.
The right brain taps into the whole of the universe, the past, the present and the future. It can access any of the knowledge that the left brain has, dipping into it and getting what it wants, but it also has different knowledge to that stored in the left brain; it sees in pictures and visions. It is non-verbal, intuitive, random, rapid, and enjoys complexity.
It is also lazy and quite happy to watch, without wanting to get involved, as it has a comfort zone and knows it could have a lot of work to do if its owner discovers it. But if he or she does, and thanks, acknowledges or praises the right brain for its help, it will help produce more and more excellent work. It is a friendship worth pursuing!

Some people are so habituated or conditioned to have a tight control over themselves that their right brains have a very difficult time escaping from the control of the left brain.
I explain it to people as follows; “We all know about security guards who have to check what, or who, is going in and out of a place, or are tasked with keeping out whatever is ‘foreign’ or problematic for their organisation. In a similar way, the left brain is the security guard of what comes into your head.”
It is said that about 8 bits of information come into your left brain as opposed to about 40 million that would come into your right brain, during the same time, if the left brain, the controller, was off guard.
